Society Islands

First an update on the weather. From time to time we all have a what was I thinking moment. My latest is when I looked at the weather charts and read the wind to be out of the West.  It really is going to be out of the East when we head to Suwarrow and that is a good thing.

French Polynesia is divide into five Island groups of witch we visited three.  The first was the Marquises, then the Tuamotus and now the Society Islands.  The Marquises are beautiful jagged mountains raising out of the ocean with the amazing overlooks.  The Tuamotus were atolls with crystal clear turquoise and blue water full of sea life for snorkelers and divers. The Society Islands are both.  Mountains, some what smaller as they are older,  surrounded by an atoll.  The snorkeling and diving is great and the landscape is awesome to a person used to flatland

I hope you enjoy the pictures..

Weather below the equator

We just went thru our first cold front.   We had a week of cool weather and rain.  I actually wrore my  jeans.  There were several odd things about this front.  First is it was a high pressure cold front. It may not be so odd because high pressure in the southern hemisphere is a counter clockwise rotation.  The high was to our southeast brining up cold air from the south.  How wired does that sound.

Then a low pressure developed to our Southeast causing the weather to warm up as the wind was out of the North., but still rainy.

The low will move Southeast and the wind will be out of the west Northwest, so much for the trade winds. The sad thing is we are to head to Suwarrow which is,  you guessed it,  too the west northwest around 600 miles.

Tuamotus

The Tuamotus are atolls and are less than spectacular as you approach from sea.  The Tuamotus are about the water and the reefs. While anchoring at Ahe we warped our chaine around several different coral mounts. As the wind changed directions, from NE to SE during storms, it was like we were on a mooring ball. We purposely anchored in forty five feet of water so we could snorkel to clear any wraps as we were warned in the guid books. Another boat anchored in seventy plus feet and was having a much more difficult time. We were able to clear the problem after snorkeling down fifty feet to see that his trip line went in one side of the coral and the chain on the other.

We only visited two atolls in the Tuamotus, Ahe and Rangiroa. Ahe had the best snorkeling and Rangiroa had the best diving. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

The giant clams are brown here, but come in the colors of the rainbow. They were awesome.

Bad Internet in French Polynesia

We should be in Tahiti tomorrow and I hope we have better Internet there.  I have lots of pictures and a great movie of Polynesian dancers. My SPOT will not work for a while so please use the yellow brick from the word ARC to see where we are. More when I get a faster connection.

We are leaving this afternoon for Aha in the Tuamotus.  3 to 4 day sail. I don't know if we will have Internet.

We are here in the Marquises and the islands are beautiful, the people are friendly and the weather is great. So I am just putting up some pictures with few comments. We have visited three islands, Hiva-oa, Fatu-Hiva (probably the most beautiful) and Nuku-Hiva.
